Holly Jones of Gary, IN. could be the FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMAN TO ATTEMPT(and hopefully complete)a full IRONMAN distance (140.3 mile) triathlon. She will compete in the Rev 3 Triathlon at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH on 9/9.
A 34 year old, single mother of twins, and resident of Gary, IN., Jones is training to become a professional triathlete. She is one of few black people in the increasingly popular sport, and Jones could be the first black woman to participate in an Ironman (140.3 mile) race. The USAT (governing body of triathlon) could not confirm the racial identity of participants in past Ironman events, or of registered professional triathletes. Holly Jones is a former pharmaceutical sales rep and personal trainer. She recently qualified for the USAT National Age Group Championship, and is currently ranked in the top 11% of the nation in her age group (including triatheletes with elite status). She is currently a successful print model and commercial actor in the Chicago market. She attended Emerson School for the Visual Performing Arts, Andrean High School, and Hobart & William Smith Colleges.
