05 August, 2014: Local news sources from Alicante have confirmed that Franciscio “Kiko” Sanchez Luna will be fit for this years Kings Cup sailing event which takes place in Palma de Majorca from 2nd – 9th August. Palma harbour and its magnificent bay will soon be awash with the sleek sailing craft competing in the 33rd annual King’s Cup Regatta, or “Copa del Rey de Vela XXXIII” in Spanish.
Recently back from the 2014 edition of the Newport – Bermuda Yacht Race, Kiko has been training hard back to full fitness inorder to be able to compete in what will be the 33rd edition of this epic Spanish sailing event. The “Kings Cup” sailing competition takes place in the waters of the bay of Palma de Mallorca, and has become one of the largest sailing events that takes place in the Mediterranean sea.
Kiko Sanchez Luna has participated in the race over 25 times finishing in the top 3 on 5 different occassions, and twice he has actually taken the King´s cup home. This year he will particpate in an XP42, a cruise sailing boat, prepared to race in the ORC1 class. Kiko’s boat will have 11 crew members including Fernando Leon Boisier, a 1996 Olympic champion 1996. Kiko Sanchez Luna was also an Olympic champion in the Barcelona 1990 games.
The first edition of the “Kings Cup” took place in 1982 with 50 participating teams, 35 Spanish and the rest from abroad. This competition was the first international circuit in 1990 to have adopted the new classification system for IMS boats. and in the 2004 event a new category was established, the IMS 670, whereby adding to existing ones, the IMS 500 and IMS 600.
This years event will convert Palma into the epicentre of the sailing world from 2nd – 9th August when over 100 entries representing 23 different nations will take part in the competition. Depending on the class of the boat, each will take part in 11 or 12 races during the comp to determine the winners, so there will be plenty of sailing to see on a daily basis.
