Why Pump Tubing Was So Important To Our Laboratory Operation

Pump tubing is such a small thing when you take into account the grand scheme of things in the biochemical research lab, but once a tubing line is damaged or wears out, time runs out. Everything has to cease in order to replace it, and that means a halt to the overall production. There are […]
There was an instance where our old electrolyte system set separately from our primary chemistry analyser was having real problems with the pump tubing, as it was wearing out faster than it should have. The peristaltic laboratory pump system was running OK, but after taking the rotator wheel apart, we discovered that two of the rollers were clogged with electrolyte buffer crystals! Problem solved, because the rollers were rolling instead of rubbing. It is strange how the results did not seem to be affected by all of this. Just in case we ran a series of simple tests again, to make sure everything was running OK.
Remember, there is very high quality tubing like peristaltic pump tubing (and many other types) available in the market, but making the right choice that would be a money saver in the end depends on the reputation of the manufacturer and the physical properties of the tubing itself.
It took a fair bit of time, since we use the tubing products at an alarming rate, but we finally decided on the platinum-cured silicon tube products for our main procedures, as it can withstand the work load of our lab.
